What Information Will Our API Quotes Include?
In the daily routine of an API importer, he must know the current prices from 2 to 3 API manufacturers in China to enable a steady API supply.
As a result, the importer needs to request quotations to monitor potential price fluctuations periodically.
A standard API quote should include the following points:
#1. Specific unit price against a specific quantity and specified trade terms
A price is a must, whether there is quantity or not.
For a formal quote, a number must be provided against a certain order quantity with specified trade terms: EXW, FOB, or CIF.
Experienced API exporters may also indicate landing costs: the price you pay when the goods are in your inland warehouse (CIF price + Import Duties + Inland costs by truck or rail).
This way, you can save time on cost calculations compared to the CIF prices you have and get your cost figure right away.
You can use this number to compare with other suppliers and select your potential supplier.
You may also hear a lot that your supplier is telling you the market price. The market price of a product is the unit price against commercial order quantities.
#2. Lead Time
When we indicate our offer, we must also clarify our lead time.
A price without a definite lead time is pointless.
Normally, the offer we indicate is for the APIs and chemicals in stock, which means we can ship promptly after your order confirmation.
When one API is out of stock, we may have to use a custom synthesis service for you. Custom synthesis takes time to complete, and the lead time is just a general idea; sometimes it’s beyond our control.
For a lead time over 90 days, things can get a little tricky: a lot can happen within a month, let alone 3.
So for urgent orders, you may want to secure the goods from suppliers with stock or imminent stock; prompt shipments usually mean higher prices.
#3. Validity
It is OK to keep the same price for one week, as you know, the price of chemicals is affected by many factors: the price of crude oil, shutdowns at major manufacturers, rising demand, etc.
Unless the supplier has a lot of goods in stock and is very committed to working with you, he is even willing to keep the price the same for one year or longer.
When a supplier doesn’t include a valid period for their good price, you may want to confirm further its validity to secure a good price, just in case the supplier raises their prices when you come back with a purchase order, which will put you in a very awkward place.
What Information is Needed for Quick API Quotes?
To avoid constant back-and-forth emails, it would be better if you could list the details for a quote.
#1. Name with CAS Number.
You should at least include the Product Name and CAS number to avoid further questions from our side.
Say you are interested in Bulk Citicoline, but there are two types of Citicolines, one is a free base, and the other is Sodium Salt.
If you add the relevant CAS number, we will know which one you need.
Purity requirements and control of single impurities:
It is easy to understand that higher purity requirements would go with higher prices.
Purity doesn’t necessarily reflect synthesis expertise, but rather control over individual impurities.
The highest standard for control of impurities should be NOT MORE THAN 0.1%, which is also the ultimate standard requirement for APIs.
To sum it up: when the purity is higher and the impurity is lower, the API price will be higher.
#3. Order Quantities
You should give an exact quantity: grams, kilos, or tons.
Many customers ask about the MOQ price.
Speaking of MOQ, the Minimum Order Quantity, there must be a drum beating inside the supplier’s head: what quantity do you need exactly?
Different companies have different minimum order quantities, and every supplier will have a doubt in their mind after they make an offer: is my quantity enough for the potential customer, or is our MOQ way too small for the heavy customer?
For us, who are willing to repack for all types of customers, there is no such thing as an MOQ in the strict sense.
Even the GMP manufacturers we are working with now agree to do repacking.

#4. Grade Types and Docs Needed for Registration.
There are many grades of one chemical.
Take the APIs, for example: If you need a certain amount of pharmaceutical ingredients for lab research, chemical-grade APIs without GMP approval should be fine.
If you need to manufacture human medicines, GMP-grade APIs should be a minimum requirement.
Speaking of GMP, if you need GMP and DMF for registration, you should say so up front.
Although many manufacturers have GMP, they don’t necessarily have DMF.
Generally speaking, GMP-Approved APIs cost twice or three times as much as non-GMP APIs and have a higher MOQ.
